According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), tooth decay is the second most prevalent health condition in the U.S. after the common cold. If you’ve never had a cavity, great work! However, it’s very likely that at some point in your life you will develop at least one.
Going back-to-school is bittersweet for both parents and students. No one wants summer to end, but students enjoy going back to school to see their friends again, getting back into school sports, and moving one step closer to graduation!
Even though going back-to-school is an exciting time, students can experience anxiety. Anxiety can interfere with sleep, wellness, and performance. But don’t worry! We’ve compiled some smile smart tips to help you smoothly transition back into the school year.
Of course our first tip is to complete your dental exam and x-rays, and cleaning, before school starts. These services are often covered at 100% by dental insurance. Nothing can distract students more than throbbing, achy tooth pain that requires an emergency dental visit. Make sure your dental health is an A+ for academic success!
Our second tip is to get enough sleep. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends:
Not getting restful sleep? Schedule a consultation for Sleep Apnea or Bruxism. A custom sleep device to treat sleep apnea can improve sleep quality and reduce chances for heart disease or stroke. A custom nightguard to prevent grinding that can cause poor sleep, headaches, and aggrevated TMJ.
Smile Smart Tip # 3Our third tip is to choose healthy food and drinks to feel your best and keep your teeth strong and healthy. Avoid drinks with color additives, sugar, carbonation, or acid to protect against decay and erosion. Choose foods with calcium, minerals like cheese, yogurt, almonds, leafy greens, and carrots.
Our fourth tip is to protect your smile during school sports. An injury can cause broken teeth, dead teeth, and even permanent tooth loss. Consider a custom athletic mouthguard for school sports in your school colors!
Brush and floss for at least 2 minutes twice a day to maintain good oral hygiene between dental visits. Choose a soft bristled toothbrush making circular motions at a 45 degree angle and waxed floss or flosser picks to get the areas in between teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach.

Emergency Dental Care in Costa MesaHave a broken tooth? Often times patients do not come to see their dentist unless a dental condition has become urgent and painful! By the time a patient is experiencing acute, sharp, throbbing pain, the condition is not so cute. Whether you just broke a tooth or have had a broken tooth for some time, it is best to see your dentist ASAP!
Teeth can break for a variety of reasons, including physical injury, biting into a hard or tough piece of food, decay that weakens the tooth enamel. They can chip, crack, or fracture, damaging one or more layers of the tooth, and break above, at, or below the gum line. Fractures of the tooth root, which are not visible to the eye, are also serious and consequently damage the blood vessels and nerves that supply the tooth. Lastly, your tooth can become loosened or displaced from their socket.
Depending on the severity of damage to the tooth and its root and how fast you act, your dentist has more opportunities to save your tooth! Surface chips and cracks can most often be fixed with fillings or bonding. Cracks or fractures that extend beyond the gum line, can be more difficult to repair, requiring a root canal and/or dental crown.
Infections in decayed or broken teeth can spread to the surrounding gum tissue, jaw bone, and can even become systemic. Your dentist can treat the infection and may be able to repair the tooth, however, some infected teeth cannot be saved. Teeth that have lost blood and nerve supply, necrosis, are usually recommended to remove.
If the tooth cannot be saved, don’t worry! There are many tooth replacement options available to restore your smile to its full function and aesthetic. At Advanced Dental Care in Costa Mesa, we offer personalized treatment to your condition and budget, including dental implants, several types of dental bridges, crowns, and dentures.
Physical trauma or injury to your face or head or excessive bleeding, swelling, or pain are serious. Please get emergency care immediately! When you take swift action, injuries resulting from trauma have the best chance for recovery. In addition, swelling, extreme pain, redness, and heat, can all be signs of a serious infection.
A tooth with a large chip, crack, or break at or near the gum line, may not bleed or swell, but be very painful. The biggest risks associated with large or deep cracks/chips is damage to the nerve and blood supply and infection. Call your dentist as soon as possible to get in for emergency dental care!
You may not notice when you have small chips or fractures, while other chips might be sharp or jagged. Sharp or jagged chips cause irritation to your tongue and cheeks. You should still see your dentist as soon as possible, even if you are not currently experiencing pain. Small cracks and chips can expose the inner layers of your teeth leaving them susceptible to decay, infection, and further breakage.

Most dental conditions can be prevented with regular check-ups with your dentist and hygienist. Have you ever wondered why you need x-rays taken at the dentist? Although dentists are heroes, they don’t have x-ray vision. Dentists can identify areas of concern on the visible surfaces of the teeth, but a dental x-ray is necessary to see what is going on underneath the surface, in-between teeth, and at the root. Dentists can learn a lot of valuable information about the history of your teeth and the current state of your mouth by taking dental x-rays.
Your dentist will generally perform a set of Full Mouth x-rays (FMX) on your first visit, every few years, or if you experience any significant health changes. A set of Full Mouth x-rays takes images of all upper and lower teeth. More often, your dentist will take Bitewing and Periapical x-rays. Bitewing x-rays can be taken of both upper and lower teeth and are focused on just the crown of a tooth. A Bitewing x-ray can detect cavities or changes in bone density. Periapical x-rays can be taken of any tooth, but generally only show one to two teeth at a time and include the root to the crown of the tooth.
Panoramic x-rays are a type of extraoral (outside of the mouth) images. They take a picture of the entire mouth structure in a single photo. Ask your dentist for more information on other types of x-rays.
At Advanced Dental Care, we use digital x-rays which emit about half the radiation of traditional film x-rays. Digital X-Rays work by placing a rectangular sensor in the mouth that acts as a backdrop for the image of the tooth. The images are generated right into your chart and can be viewed instantly!
Occasionally, a patient will have questions about the safety of taking dental x-rays. The American Dental Association works very closely with the FDA on radiation safety. Digital x-rays combined with trained professionals and equipment monitoring provide for minimal doses of radiation exposure which have been found to be completely safe.
Digital x-rays have been a great technological advancement for the dental field. Ask your dentist to show you your crowns and roots at your next dental visit!
