Meet the Doctor Dr. Jeremy B. Jorgenson

Are Porcelain Veneers right for me?

January 17, 2019

Porcelain Veneers in Costa Mesaveneers in mouth

Have you ever wondered how you can fix that chip on your front tooth or teeth damaged in an accident or just close a small gap?  You may have a variety of options including dental Porcelain Veneers.  Porcelain veneers are custom-made, wafer-thin sheets of porcelain bonded to the front of your natural tooth.  They can instantly change the appearance and warmth of your smile.

Deciding whether Porcelain Veneers are a good option for you is a choice that you should make with a dentist you trust.  Your dentist will perform an examination to let you know if you are a good candidate for dental veneers and discuss the options for achieving your dream smile.

Things to Consider when Choosing Dental Veneers

  • Facial Shape
  • Facial Symmetry
  • Shape of Teeth
  • Shape of Smile
  • Shade
  • Brightness
  • Size (length, width)
  • Gum line
  • Occlusion

The Dental Veneers Process

Depending on how quickly you want to start dental veneers, you may achieve your dream smile in as little as two visits to our Costa Mesa dental office.  For patients with more flexibility, it is best to take additional steps in the dental veneer process to ensure the best results.

Initial Visit

Scheduling your initial visit with Dr. Jeremy Jorgenson couldn’t be any easier!  You can book online 24/7 or call, text, or email us with you desired appointment times.

Before Porcelain Veneer Treatment – Concerns: Thin Enamel and Peg Laterals with old Bonding

Once you arrive for your initial visit and have registered, you will meet with Dr. Jorgenson to discuss what imperfections are bothering you about your smile and what your ideal smile would look like.  Dr. Jorgenson will conduct an examination to provide all possible treatment options.  He will then go over the many factors that must be evaluated when performing dental veneers to ensure we achieve your desired size, shape, shade, and overall aesthetic for your face.

We’ll use before and afters, shade guides, and smile libraries to help you choose the smile that is best for you!

Initial Impressions

Once you’ve decided to move forward with the veneers process, we’ll start by taking impressions of your current smile so the lab knows exactly where the teeth are currently located and the size, shape, and occlusion of the teeth.  After taking the impressions, we send them to the lab with instructions on how to fabricate your Porcelain Veneers.

Wax-Up and Adjustments (Optional)

Our lab will create a plaster model of your current smile called a diagnostic cast and place the proposed shape and size veneers on the cast using dental wax.  This allows you to envision what your smile could look like in real life 3D!  You can review the proposed shape, size, approximate shade, alignment, and overall appearance of your new smile before the lab makes your permanent porcelain veneers.  You will work with Dr. Jorgenson to make any adjustments to the diagnostic wax-up.

Prep and Temporaries

You are finally ready to start the physical preparation for porcelain veneers.  Dr. Jorgenson begins by removing a thin layer of your natural tooth enamel to create creating a smooth, flat surface where the porcelain veneer will be placed.  We only remove as much enamel as needed to bond the veneer in the proper placement for the most realistic, natural look.  This is typically about half of a millimeter.

Once the teeth are prepped, a final impression is taken and this impression sent to the lab to make the permanent veneers.  Next, we create temporary teeth-shaped coverings from an acrylic material to protect the teeth while the lab creates your permanent veneers.  Temporary veneers do not look like permanent veneers and are only created to cover and protect the prepped teeth.

Temporary Veneers – Teeth-shaped covering made from Acrylic

For most patients, this is the worst part of the process.  You’re expecting a perfect smile, but instead the temporaries aren’t going to look perfect.  Temporaries are not meant to last forever so be gentle to prevent fracturing.  Avoid hard, sticky foods or foods that stain teeth easily.  Your permanent veneers will be ready for final placement in 1-2 weeks.

Final Placement

The big day has finally come! You’re ready to finalize your dream smile.  On the day of your final placement, you will again be numbed for your comfort.  Dr. Jorgenson will remove the temporary veneers and make sure the teeth are clean.  Then he will slide the permanent veneers into place so you can see what your new smile will look like and make any adjustments before the permanent cementation.

Beautiful, Natural-looking Porcelain Veneers

Once you’ve given us the thumbs up, Dr. Jorgenson will polish the teeth and apply an etching solution to the enamel where the veneers will be cemented.  The etching material creates a more ideal surface for adhering the porcelain veneer to the natural tooth.  Once the tooth is etched, the bonding or specialized tooth-colored cement will then be applied to the veneer and the veneer placed on your tooth.  Once the veneer is in perfect position, it is cured or hardened into place using an ultraviolet curing light. This process continues until each porcelain veneer is permanently cemented.

Presto Chango! You have achieved your Dream Smile!

How do I know if I have a cavity?

Cavity treatment in Costa Mesa

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), tooth decay is the second most prevalent health condition in the U.S. after the common cold.  If you’ve never had a cavity, great work!  However, it’s very likely that at some point in your life you will develop at least one.

How will you know if you have a cavity? Just because you aren’t experiencing any pain doesn’t mean everything is fine and dandy.  You could have active decay that is in the early stages and may be able to be reversed with professional dental care.  Tooth decay exhibits a variety of symptoms depending on the severity of your tooth decay.

Symptoms of a Cavity

best dentist costa mesa - emergency dentist costa mesa - cosmetic dentist costa mesa - dental implants costa mesa - dentist near me - dentist open now - saturday dentist - ppo dentist - delta dental - teeth whitening - dental veneers - laser dentistry - invisalign - tooth pain - cavity - dental crown - root canal - toothache - staining

• Nothing (best time to catch decay in the early stages)
• Continuous or spontaneous tooth pain
• Tooth sensitivity
• Pain (dull or sharp) when eating something sweet, hot, or cold
• Visible staining on the surface of your tooth which may appear brown, black, or white
• Visible holes in your tooth (the holes are likely cavities)
• Pain when chewing or biting your teeth down together

What to do if you have a cavity?

best dentist costa mesa - emergency dentist costa mesa - cosmetic dentist costa mesa - dental implants costa mesa - dentist near me - dentist open now - saturday dentist - ppo dentist - delta dental - teeth whitening - dental veneers - laser dentistry - invisalign - tooth pain - cavity - dental crown - root canal - toothache - staining

A quick exam at our Costa Mesa dental office will let you know the best course of treatment for your particular situation. The recommendation could be as simple as a “watch” with recommendations for home care to fluoride treatment.

If the decay is more pervasive or you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, Dr. Jeremy Jorgenson may recommend treatment for the cavity.  Treatment options could include a composite (tooth-colored) filling for moderate decay.  If the decay is covering many surfaces of the tooth or has affected deeper layers of the tooth a dental crown may be recommended.

best dentist costa mesa - emergency dentist costa mesa - cosmetic dentist costa mesa - dental implants costa mesa - dentist near me - dentist open now - saturday dentist - ppo dentist - delta dental - teeth whitening - dental veneers - laser dentistry - invisalign - tooth pain - cavity - dental crown - root canal - toothache - stainingIn more severe situations, the decay can reach the pulp which houses the nerves and blood vessels of the tooth.  Once decay has gotten this far a root canal and dental crown would likely be the recommended treatment.  If decay has completely destroyed the tooth or if the infection is too pervasive the tooth may not be savable and might have to be extracted.

How to prevent a cavity?

You can help prevent the damaging effects of plaque and tartar at home by brushing twice a day with a soft bristled toothbrush, using a toothpaste with fluoride, and flossing at least once a day.  Additional preventative measures include eating a well-balanced diet, rinsing after meals if you can’t brush, and asking your dentist about fluoride treatment.  Most importantly, seeing your dentist at regularly prescribed visits can determine if the above measures are effective for you.

Importance of Routine Dental Visits

Obviously, the best time to catch a cavity would be in the early stages, when there are few, if any, symptoms (trust us on this one).

That’s why the American Dental Association (ADA) and dental professionals stress the importance of maintaining regular visits to your dentist.  Although we are always here when you need us, we don’t want to get into the habit of only seeing you when you are in pain!

Back-to-School – Smile Smart Tips

August 14, 2018

Smile Smart Tips for Success!

Going back-to-school is bittersweet for both parents and students.  No one wants summer to end, but students enjoy going back to school to see their friends again, getting back into school sports, and moving one step closer to graduation!

Even though going back-to-school is an exciting time, students can experience anxiety.  Anxiety can interfere with sleep, wellness, and performance.  But don’t worry!  We’ve compiled some smile smart tips to help you smoothly transition back into the school year.

Smile Smart Tip # 1

Of course our first tip is to complete your dental exam and x-rays, and cleaning, before school starts.  These services are often covered at 100% by dental insurance.  Nothing can distract students more than throbbing, achy tooth pain that requires an emergency dental visit. Make sure your dental health is an A+ for academic success!

Smile Smart Tip # 2

Our second tip is to get enough sleep.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends:

  • 9-12 hours for school-age children
  • 8-10 hours for teens
  • 7 or more hours for adults

Not getting restful sleep?  Schedule a consultation for Sleep Apnea or Bruxism.  A custom sleep device to treat sleep apnea can improve sleep quality and reduce chances for heart disease or stroke.  A custom nightguard to prevent grinding that can cause poor sleep, headaches, and aggrevated TMJ.

best dentist costa mesa - emergency dentist costa mesa - cosmetic dentist costa mesa - dental implants costa mesa - dentist near me - dentist open now - saturday dentist - ppo dentist - delta dental - teeth whitening - dental veneers - laser dentistry - invisalignSmile Smart Tip # 3

Our third tip is to choose healthy food and drinks to feel your best and keep your teeth strong and healthy.  Avoid drinks with color additives, sugar, carbonation, or acid to protect against decay and erosion.  Choose foods with calcium, minerals like cheese, yogurt, almonds, leafy greens, and carrots.

Smile Smart Tip # 4

Our fourth tip is to protect your smile during school sports.  An injury can cause broken teeth, dead teeth, and even permanent tooth loss.  Consider a custom athletic mouthguard for school sports in your school colors!

Smile Smart Tip # 5

Brush and floss for at least 2 minutes twice a day to maintain good oral hygiene between dental visits.  Choose a soft bristled toothbrush making circular motions at a 45 degree angle and waxed floss or flosser picks to get the areas in between teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach.

Oral Cancer

April 13, 2018

Oral Cancer Facts

The Oral Cancer Foundation estimates approximately 132 patients are diagnosed with an oral cancer EVERY DAY!  That means over 51,550 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year.  Early detection of neck, mouth, and throat cancers is critical to identify the appropriate treatment and reach the best outcomes.

The main causes of oral cancer are alcohol and tobacco use and human papilloma virus (HPV), specifically strain HPV16. You can reduce your risk of getting oral cancer by avoiding excessive alcohol intake, avoiding tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, vaping, chew, snuff, pipes, dip, etc.) completely, and by reducing direct skin/mouth contact with another person with HPV.

Survival Rates

Oral cancer has lower survival rates than cervical cancer, thyroid cancer, and Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  Survival rates have not increased in over a decade.  When detected in early stages, there is a 70-80% survival rate.  However, when detected in later stages, the survival rate is less than 50% after 5 years.  Most oral and neck cancers are not detected in the early stages, because of lack of patient awareness and the overall difficulty of detecting these types of cancers.  This is why it is critical to visit your dentist every 3-6 months for your professional exam or any time you detect something unusual.

Oral Cancer Self Exam

The Oral Cancer Foundation has put together this instructional video so you can perform your own at-home exam between dental visits or if you notice something unusual.

Schedule your free oral cancer screening with Dr. Jeremy Jorgenson today!  Our friendly and knowledgeable staff is here to answer any questions 24/7.  You can reach our Costa Mesa dental office by phone at (714) 424-9099 or book online anytime at www.mycostamesadentist.com.
